The International Society for Cardiovascular Translational Research Announces the ISCTR 2014 Scholarship Awardee

Zain Khalpey MD, PhD, MRCS

Dr. Khalpey MD, PhD, MRCS, associate professor, University of Arizona Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery, currently serves as the Surgical Director of the Heart Transplant and Mechanical Circulatory Support Program at the  University of Arizona College of Medicine – Tucson. He is a multifaceted medical expert – a clinician, a scientist and a translational researcher who previously received training at Harvard Medical School (Brigham and Women’s Hospital) and Columbia University. Dr. Khalpey has authored and published over 100 medical manuscripts.

ISCTR 2012 Scholarship Awardee

Bill Gogas, MD

Atlanta, Emory University

Bill Gogas, M.D. (GR), PH.D. (NL), F.A.C.C. (US), is clinical scientist in the Department of Medicine, Division of Cardiology of Emory University School of Medicine, since 2012. He has over 10 years of experience in the clinical and research field of Cardiology and Interventional Cardiology. He received his PH.D. Degree from the Erasmus University, Rotterdam in 2014 under the mentorship of Prof. Patrick W. J. C. Serruys. His doctoral thesis investigated the long-term vascular responses following percutaneous coronary interventions with metallic stents and bioresorbable scaffolds utilizing in vivo sound- and light-based imaging modalities. The same year he was elected Fellow of the American College of Cardiology. During his doctoral studies he received the first International Society of Cardiovascular Translational Research award of the American College of Cardiology Foundation, which allowed him to expand his prior research in the direction of vascular biology and device biomechanics. He has authored and published over 50 peer-reviewed manuscripts and has given numerous talks on his research. He received his M.D. Degree from the University of Athens Medical School in 2002. He completed his residency program in Internal Medicine under the mentorship of Prof. Dr. med. Sotirios Raptis in 2004. Between 2004-2009 he completed fellowships in Cardiology and Interventional Cardiology under the mentorship of Prof. John Lekakis and in 2010 received his license to practice Medicine and Cardiology in Europe.
